CHEYNEY-- Bloomsburg University's Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored a team-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough as the Huskies lost to Cheyney University, 68-63, on Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game.
Bloomsburg held the early advantage in the game grabbing an 11-2 lead seven minutes into the game with Steph Rankin (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) scoring five points and Colleen Kegerreis (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) four for the Huskies. Cheyney rallied and went in front 17-16 with 8:19 to play in the half using a 15-5 run. The teams then traded leads for the remainder of the half with the Wolves leading 32-31 at the break.
Cheyney opened a six-point lead, 46-40, through the first seven minutes of the second half before the Huskies rallied. Three-pointers by Gallagher and Kelly Joyce (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) keyed the comeback. After Cheyney regained a six point margin at 58-52, the Huskies once again fought back and narrowed the gap to a bucket, 60-58, after two free throws from Gallagher with 2:06 to play. With Cheyney leading 64-60 with under 20 seconds to play, Bloomsburg's Angela Mensch (Royersford/Spring-Ford) hit her only shot attempt of the game, a three-pointer, to bring the Huskies within a point with 17 seconds to go. In the final 14 seconds, though, Cheyney went 4-4 from the foul line to seal the win.
Gallagher led the Huskies, now 8-13, 0-8 in the PSAC East, with 20 points, while Kegerreis added 15. Cheyney, 11-7, 6-2 in the PSAC East, got 23 points from Stephanie Orji, while Lutfiyya Muhammed added 18. Bloomsburg will host East Stroudsburg on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
